Sedation Consult Shares Monitoring Education Resource as DANB Opens New CDA Pathway

DANB expects its additional CDA pathway to become available in early 2027; Sedation Consult highlights its 14-credit online monitoring course.

COLUMBIA, MO, UNITED STATES, October 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Sedation Consult is sharing an education update for dental teams following the Dental Assisting National Board’s September 23 announcement of a new pathway for Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification.

DANB said the new pathway is intended to expand access to CDA certification for dental assistants who complete qualifying programs that are not accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation but are within institutions accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-approved agency. DANB is inviting eligible programs to apply for approval and expects the pathway to become officially available in early 2027.

The announcement brings renewed attention to education and career development within dental assisting. Sedation Consult is highlighting Essentials of Monitoring (Online), an online continuing-education program created for dentists, dental anesthesiologists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants.

The course covers anesthesia-related patient-care concepts, including patient requirements for sedation, the continuum of sedation, documentation and consent, vital signs, monitoring basics, electrocardiogram fundamentals, patient recovery and discharge, and dental-office emergency protocols.

Essentials of Monitoring includes 14 hours of lectures, written lecture notes, and a 100-question examination. The course page states that participants must attain a score of 75% to pass. Sedation Consult, LLC and the Academy of Continued Education designate the activity for 14 continuing-education credits. The course page also states that it is approved by the State Dental Boards of Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

The program is created and presented by Allan Schwartz, DDS, CRNA, a Columbia, Missouri dentist. Sedation Consult states that Dr. Schwartz has taught anesthesia to dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, certified registered nurse anesthesiologists, physicians, and nurses for more than 13 years. He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics at Saint Louis University’s Center for Advanced Dental Education.
